Biography:
Laval is a Calgary dad, husband, airline captain and global adventurer best known for being the only Canadian to have summited Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen.
Laval was born in Edmonton in 1968 and attended school in Morinville and Sherwood Park. He challenged himself early in life by achieving his Airline Transport Pilot Licence and continues to enjoy the airline operation with Canadian North where he has served in several leadership positions and is currently a Calgary based Boeing 737 captain.
Among his accomplishments, he holds the record for the fastest ever crossing of the Atlantic Ocean from mainland Canada to mainland Europe in a solo row boat, completing the trip in 53 days. He is the only person to have climbed and skied Iraq’s highest mountain Cheekha Dar, he has climbed the highest mountain on each of the Earth’s 7 continents thus completing the 7 Summit challenge. He has climbed the highest mountains in over 19 countries. In January of 2020 he summited Mount Vinson in Antarctica after a 200 km ski expedition in Antarctica.
Laval has a passion for the wild empty places on maps and the for the challenges and rewards that come with time well spent in the natural world. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society, the Explorers Club and has raised over $100,000 for the Alberta Cancer Society.
Some would consider his challenges hazardous and high risk. See and hear what it takes to have the ability to step out way past normal, and shove off way past safe, but come back alive.
